...."I really do care about people," she says. "That’s the only reason I’m in this race. And so, I’m glad that that comes across. In terms of getting things done, that’s where it is hard to always communicate my track record. I have a track record of getting things done, whether it is what I did at Trek, whether it is at the Boys & Girls Club. But it’s not always easy to get across the message. And so that’s just people getting to know me and my track record."

Early in the trip, she told a story about a visit to Hudson the campaign made in August. At the end of the day, as she walked into the motel where she would stay that night, she noticed a group of people sitting on benches, having beers and smoking cigarettes. She laughs as she says, "I just felt like relaxing." So dropped off her things in her room, bought a soda from the vending machine and asked the group if they'd mind if she joined them.

"I'm Mary Burke, and I'm running for governor," she told them. They offered a beer — she laughs again — "Yeah, actually, that looked much better."

"We talked about things, it wasn't all politics, it was just about different stuff," she says. "I wish, actually, that’s the way you could campaign and get to enough people. Because a lot of misconceptions can be out there from just, you know, the way that it happens right now."......
