..... Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke stirred up the audience at the National Rifle Association national convention on Friday with an outlandish “proposition” involving the Great Seal of the United States, Right Wing Watch reported.

“You know, the one with the American bald eagle holding an olive branch in one claw and arrows in the other. We should take those arrows out of the eagle’s claws and replace them with a semi-automatic rifle, preferably one that shoots M-855 ammunition.”

The party has endorsed and supported his opponents, written opinions against him, etc. Despite that, he just won reelection last year.

On edit: this is the beginning of at least his second 4yr term, maybe third if he managed to sneak under the radar on his first election.

If we'd just done it years ago we wouldn't be having to be dealing with all these RWNJ public employees bringing us down. Let the good people of Illinois deal with them.

If you could somehow trim the Milwaukee suburbs, and Waukesha county out, I'd get behind that. But the city of Milwaukee is worth keeping.

Look at that uniform!

He looks like a third world despot. I wonder if he got that at Khaddafi's estate sale.

Seriously, 4 stars on his epaulets? Unfortunately, he really is that deluded. And double unfortunately, the good folks in Milwaukee County keep re-electing him. The (D) after his name just keeps fooling people. And in primaries, he has his reliable right wing radio buddies get the GOP out to vote for him every damn time. It's disgusting that he gets to run as a Democrat.

He gets to run as a Democrat by title, while opposing everything on the Democratic platform. WTF. There's something wrong with that.

Particularly from the perspective of regularly using the vestments and authority of his office to speak of things that advocate for interpersonal gun violence as protection.

This performance is just more of his socially deviant, radical, views expressed through that language of macho jingoism and salaciousness, that rewards him with celebrity from NRA supporters and notoriety from opponents. All news is good news when it comes to being known.

Insane? Insane literally? or certifiably? Really, not so much. The problem isn't a mental disorder makes him dysfunction.

The problem is he is pretty functional it could be argued that it's highly functional.

He does this because it gives him celebrity. It's much less mental illness and much more political performance 'art'. Although I would call it crude, brutish and not particularly artful.

It gives him job security in an elected office. Lots of people put on performances for their jobs it doesn't make them insane, literally or certifiably.

Using such terms as pejoratives doesn't alter any of the results Clarke wants, it mostly just promotes the acceptability of the notion that mental illness is shameful.

can earn one the title of mental illness. Your thoughtful input on this topic is well noted and appreciated because to disagree can also be labeled mentally insane too.

1) It's harmful as it promotes prejudice and discrimination.

77.2% of people in WI with dx of mental illness are unemployed. That far exceeds unemployment attributable to the disorders themselves.

In the United States and it's territories this averages to about 80%.

http://www2.nami.org/Template.cfm?Section=press_room&template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=169616

Those numbers well exceed unemployment by sexual orientation, gender or race, where unemployment and under-representation is frequently used as an ensign in arguing the presence of discrimination and for whom the use of terms referring to orientation, sexuality or race as pergoratives is seen as wrong.

It's no accident that people wishing to infer Clarke's positions are despicable wouldn't refer to Clarke by the n-word but have no problem referring to his mental state. Prejudice and discrimination against the mentally is widely accepted.

The use of shaming language is not helpful in arguing against the positions Clarke takes or in his defeat in elections. So why do we do it?

Because it makes us feel good to name call.

2) This sort of language plays in the US vs Them dynamic that allows US to say that the Them are inferior/diseased/despicable. In that dichotomy it infers US is superior. We like to feel superior. We cheer each other on in such back-patting.

The rightness of that makes us feel righteous in our use of such language. Ready to get up in arms about censorship and free-speech of what is stigmatizing, shaming ableist speech. Because, gee in a manner analogous to singing frat-songs about US on a college bus, making statement that infer we are more mentally well than David Clarke is fun and lifts us up.

3) And lastly, so that it might be the last thing a reader forgets...there are alternatives:

Clarke deserves to be ridiculed, his behavior and his speech are regularly ridiculous.
