Assembly passes measure allowing school board president to fill vacancy

RACINE COUNTY — Pushing aside objections over local control, the state Assembly has passed a bill that would give Racine Unified School Board President Melvin Hargrove power to fill a vacant board seat.

Representatives approved the measure on a 57-37 vote late Thursday afternoon. ............................
Local control in dispute

State Rep. Cory Mason pushed one amendment Thursday that would have eliminated the Racine Unified-specific language and another amendment that would have set a special election to fill the seat. Both amendments failed.

Mason, D-Racine, called the bill an “extraordinary intrusion into local control” and said it would make an acrimonious situation worse by effectively letting one of the board factions win.

He said the Legislature has no business intervening in local government disputes................

“I would ask that you consider this question before you cast your vote,” Mason told lawmakers during the debate. “Would you like the Legislature to do this to a municipal government in your district? If the answer is no, then please don’t do it to mine.”.......
