Gov. Walker whittling down campaign debt

Madison — Gov. Scott Walker is making slow but steady progress paying down the debt left from his presidential campaign, a key step needed for the Wisconsin Republican to consider another political race.

Walker owes just under $382,000 from his short-lived 2015 presidential campaign, according to his latest filing with the Federal Election Commission. That's down from nearly $900,000 in May.

Since Walker dropped out of the presidential race in September 2015, the debt has dogged the governor, who is eyeing a run for a third term in Wisconsin in 2018.

He has said he would pay it off by the end of 2016. The latest filing shows that's at least possible, though it may take Walker a little longer.
