Janesville poised to settle multimillion-dollar lawsuit

JANESVILLE—It's likely the Janesville City Council will decide at its Monday meeting to put a longstanding legal battle to bed, possibly saving the city millions of dollars in legal fees.

Maria Caya, a former Washington Elementary School teacher, was accused in 2013 of being drunk during a class outing to Rivers Edge Bowl. She resigned with an $18,000 settlement, which equaled her daily wage times the number of sick days she'd accumulated throughout her 14-year career.

In 2015, Caya sued the city for $5.5 million after police released to The Gazette that Caya had a 0.27 blood-alcohol content during the incident.

Caya claimed the improper release of such medical records caused her emotional and psychological distress, embarrassment and damage to her reputation.
