Ryan-Trump relationship awkward to the end

Mukwonago— The awkward saga of Paul Ryan and Donald Trump took a final strange turn Saturday when Ryan, in a late switch, said he was prepared to campaign with Trump in Wisconsin.

But a short time later, the Trump campaign canceled its Sunday visit to the state, making it unlikely that the party’s fractious power duo would ever appear on the same stage in the 2016 contest.

“People made more about this than it really was,” Ryan said of whether the two would campaign together.

“If your nominee was going to come to Wisconsin, and I was also going to be in Wisconsin, then I was going to come with our nominee, because I think Republicans should unify,” Ryan said in a brief interview Saturday after holding a rally here with Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, and Gov. Scott Walker, Sen. Ron Johnson and other Republicans.
