we are selling our property in beautiful Door County...

hubby too disabled to go thru the effort of the trip from CT and the inaccessibility of the house for him. Plus, the expense of upkeep. His sister has given up, too due to her inability to do the stairs in that house. Age takes its toll. And his kids/her kids are not interested in having the property and would sell it in an instant if they inherited it.

We don't know how much to ask for the house and will check with a realtor there. There's land, a house and a guest cottage, all in great condition so we figure it will be worth a tidy sum. And we can use the money.

It's sad but inevitable. It was hubby's parents house and for years after their deaths we were able to get out there.

I thought we'd never see the day this would happen. I will miss the symphony season which I always loved. But the handwriting was on the wall...we still have friends/neighbors who are dear souls and who have watched our property all these years. I feel bad for them as they don't know who will be their neighbors but I hope for the best.

This has not been a time in our lives that were without some bitter infighting but life goes on...

We had a pretty bad squabble with her and her RW husband before he died. I don't know what her politics are now and I don't care. She and her husband caused my husband so much grief it is unforgiveable. Since her husband's death she may have repented and who knows, she may be in worse physical shape than we knew. She is grossly obese, tho, or was a few years back.

May I ask if you know how land prices are in idyllic Door County? I'm guessing that really nice land there is at a premium...but IDK really...

zillow.com to get an estimate of the property value. It may not be what it will sell for, but at least you'll have a ball park idea prior to contacting an agent.

Visited the area a few years ago and found it to be a wonderfully scenic trip.

My mother's family is from there (great x? grandfather was one of the first European settlers in the county), still have relatives there, spent every summer at grandma's place right on the bay. It's become fairly touristified but you can get away from them. I'm sorry you're having to sell but I'm sure the property will sell for a good price - especially if it's on the water. It's pretty right-wing territory these days, though, so despite the scenery I wouldn't want to live there.

Ours was on the other side of the State in Barron county. Because it was not a full time Residence, the Real Estate Tax assessments became unbearable. And of course, that area is a cesspool of not very nice people . From one of the most Progressive to most Regressive voter switch.

I'll spare you the tale of how I came to be posting here but your story caught my attention.

Do you still have the house in Wisconsin? I would have PMed you but I have too few posts.

with families wrote to him jointly, begging him to put off selling it because they love the house and the kids have such fond memories, to please reconsider and hold off for a couple of years. My hubby was in the ER a day after this letter arrives and I am frantic about his condition. I wrote them a hot letter saying essentially "How can you tell this to us. He simply cannot afford the $500 a month he owes on the upkeep and taxes, so you two can have the nice vacation home for you and your familes. I was so angry. Hubby was horrified that I wrote such a strongly worded letter, but he calmed down. So he has written to the nieces and said he absoutely wouldn't reconsider because he doesn't know what health problems he might have in the future years. Not to mention the monetary drain every month. So we're waiting for word from their mother, his sister, to get the sale moving...

Long family saga but it's where'we are. You can email me at jeanhuett@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. My name is jeanette and I live in New Haven CT.

Hope to hear from you!
