A bill introduced in the state Assembly this week would create the first charter school in Wisconsin specifically for teens recovering from substance abuse.
The bill, co-authored by Sens. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills, and Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, would allow the UW Systems Office of Educational Opportunity to seek bids for a charter school operator to start a school for no more than 15 students who are recovering from addictions.
The bill also is supported by 10 Assembly Democrats, including Reps. Melissa Sargent and Lisa Subeck, both of Madison.
The school would be the first founded by the OEO, created in the state 2015-17 budget, which has the ability to bypass local school boards and authorize independent charter schools in Madison and Milwaukee. It would also be the first recovery charter school in Wisconsin.

The charter school structure siphons money out of the system. This is an important endeavor. Why not use all available funds to help the students rather than the stockholders?

(18,964 posts)Republicans occasionally, but not very often do something to address real world problems...
you know...like a blind squirrel finding an acorn....
this one has a bit of a taint to it in that it is seeking a "free market" solution to a very real problem...a privitized school...
If they can amend it to write very strict parameters for how the school must be staffed and perhaps demand that the treatment protocols are "evidence based", then maybe, just maybe they can accomplish something useful
I work with the problem of addiction daily and know that the treatment, AODA treatment portion of the problem has been greatly neglected...anything that will address that is a plus...as long as the Repubs don't screw it up through cronyism and corruption like they usually do.
