UW regents set 'guidepost' for campus free speech with no mention of penalties GOP lawmakers want
While reflecting concerns about free speech protections, a "guidepost" for campuses unanimously approved by the University of Wisconsin Regents on Friday does not impose penalties some GOP lawmakers are demanding for student offenders.
Regent Vice President Drew Petersen called it concise and direct.
"And here is what it is not it is not prescriptive, nor is it punitive in scope," he said. "It is rather a guidepost for our campuses to be alert to honor opposing views and to promote a civil discourse environment."
The regents did, however, commit to reviewing existing policies to "ensure each of our campuses supports and maintains an environment where civil discussions can occur as students learn, study, and prepare for their futures."
