Scott Walker, two talented, bright and experienced women are seeking the governors chair in the Democratic primary. For some reason, little has been said about the gender issue in our major newspapers or on radio or TV.
I have opted not to endorse any of the four Democrats running frankly, they are all good. But I must point out that if Tom Barrett, a very capable and likable candidate, should lose, he remains mayor of our most important city, a job at least as challenging as governor in my view. It must be noted that Tom was just re-elected mayor of Milwaukee. He wont miss a beat if the voters choose someone else to be governor.
Given the challenges facing Wisconsin, it is foolish to rely only on the traditional pool of candidates. The challenges facing Wisconsin require our best minds. We would do well if we elect Kathleen Falk or Kathleen Vinehout governor while the mayor of Milwaukee works with the very capable governor to create real jobs and come to the aid of our public schools.
Either of the Kathleens Falk, the former Dane County executive, or Vinehout, a state senator would be significantly better than Walker. And electing one of them would open doors for other women. Some have made clear that they dont like something about Falk, but all acknowledge that she is bright, ethical and capable. Vinehout has burst on the scene and has grabbed attention, particularly in the northern part of the state. I am convinced she would also be a very capable governor.
Either Falk or Vinehout would be better than Tom Barrett, in my humble opinion. Barrett is too close to being a blue dog for my tastes. I really like Kathleen Vinehout, and will support her in the primary next month.
