Poll reveals Wisconsin GOP Senate primary a toss-upA new poll just five days out from the Wisconsin Republican Senate primary offers little insight into the final results, as it gives the leading three candidates a near-three-way tie.
Businessman Eric Hovde barely leads the pack, with 27 percent support in the survey from Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm. Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson (R) comes in close behind at 25 percent support, and former Rep. Mark Neumann (R-Wis.) polls at 24 percent support. Slightly further behind is Wisconsin State Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, who snags 9 percent of the vote.
The results are largely unchanged from PPP's last poll a week ago, indicating voters have essentially made up their minds and at this point the race will come down to turnout. Which is why it's significant that Hovde has a large lead among voters who are "very excited" to cast their ballots he brings in 37 percent of those voters, compared to 20 percent for Fitzgerald, 10 percent for Neumann and 17 percent for Thompson.
But Neumann, who benefits from some name recognition, leads with women, evangelical voters, and is tied with Thompson for the lead with seniors and the last two voting blocs tend to play a pivotal role in GOP primaries. The primary is on Aug. 14. The poll, of 557 likely Republican primary voters, was conducted from Aug. 8-9 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percent.

We could help elect Tammy Baldwin by voting in the Republican primary.

(18,122 posts)Thompson was either ahead or tied (depending on which poll), while Baldwin could beat the other three. Of course, Thompson was best of the group because of name recognition; I'm not sure how he'd stand up to current scrutiny.

(18,964 posts)the Repubs I talk to have a "reagan-like" reverence for Tommy....they look at his terms of office as Wisconsin's "golden years"...I'd be more worried about Tommy just for that reason.
Hovde has lots of wonderful baggage.

(34,658 posts)We're lucky he's not running for president. He would be a lot easier to sell than Romney.

(53,475 posts)... so if you have a Democratic candidate that needs your support you will not be able to vote for him/her and one of the Republican Senate candidates.
Example, here in State Senate District 20, Tanya Lohr is our Democratic candidate, but we expect the Republicans to try some tricky stuff, perhaps writing in a fake Democratic. If Tanya were to lose, we'd have a choice between Glen Grothmann and the "fake".
If you can, I recommend a vote for Tommy tomorrow. He's got major baggage. So does Hovde, but Hovde also has a billion dollars to drown out the truth.

(8,506 posts)We don't need another Johnson in the US Senate.
I think Thompson is more beatable than Hovde, mainly because no one has been successful in painting Hovde as anything other than what he says he is. There's not much time left for Baldwin to do so either.

(8,879 posts)hard to live with. Thompson seems much more moderate to me (work not welfare excepted). He would be less scary to me.
