Racine State Senator announces run for Lt. Governor

RACINE, Wis. — Democratic state Sen. John Lehman announced Monday that he was running for lieutenant governor, giving up the Senate seat representing Racine that he won in a 2012 recall election.

Lehman is the first Democrat to announce they are running for the post. If more than one Democrat runs, the winner will be determined in the Aug. 12 primary and then be paired with the Democratic nominee in November. So far, Mary Burke is the only announced Democratic candidate for governor.

Lehman, 68, faced a tough re-election battle for the Senate seat that covers the city of Racine. Republicans redrew the district's boundaries in 2010, making it more favorable to the GOP.

Van Wanggaard, a Republican who defeated Lehman in 2010 but lost to him in the recall two years ago, has already announced he is running for the seat again. Wanggaard said he thought Lehman would retire and not run for anything next year. Not having Lehman as an opponent won't change his approach to the campaign, Wanggaard said.
