Fuck... fuck fuck fuck...fuck. Walker makes move to harvest last old growth forrest.

FUCK...

Gov. Scott Walker is calling for more trees to be harvested from a national forest in far northern Wisconsin as part of the state's efforts to spur growth in its struggling timber industry.

Loggers and forestry experts have complained about how the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest has been managed. They say the 1.5-million-acre forest is being underused, in part because of shortsighted federal harvest plans, Gannett Wisconsin Media reported ( http://post.cr/JmKVF9).

Walker agreed, saying in a statement Thursday that he thinks a more responsible harvest plan would yield greater output and provide an economic boost.

"The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest contains a valuable resource that, right now, is underutilized _ millions of feet of timber just waiting to be harvest in an environmentally sensitive, sustainable way," Walker said. "This is another way to ensure forestry remains a vibrant part of Wisconsin's economy."

...fuck.

How does cutting down the last of the old growth forests ensure any kind of forest? All some people can see is dollar signs.

These results did not make it possible for sustainable forestry. No timber company wants to go in and harvest just a few trees per acre, using horses to get the downed trees out. And they don't take all the "scrap" like huge piles of branches left all over the area, making new growth impossibly choked out.

Edit to add: There will probably be either chicken houses or a crappy subdivision to replace the old piney woods that were there when my mother was born here in 1917.

I mourn for your old piney woods. It seems that places of purely natural beauty have no purpose to the money grubbers.

and sometimes it's posted as a "protected forest area by so and so" and it's only 100 yards deep on both sides of the road. In Oregon they don't even bother with that anymore unless the clear cut is on federal land. Oregon is where I was born and raised... it is not the same place anymore. I can't even recognize the trails I used to hike back in the 70's. Save what you have left Wisconsin. It's worth fighting for.

that Walker and his ilk do these atrocities just to make people hurt, not to build industry. They like it. It's a drug. It's to feel power when you can make people who can feel, feel pain and that you can enrich yourselves on that pain just makes it more exciting. Sociopaths. Psychopaths. They have no respect or insight past their own ego. They feel nothing.

Trees are the grandest, longest living life form on this planet, and they would kill them off in minutes, seconds... for what? We kill the trees, we kill our own species. The earth will win in the end but we won't be here.

It's the cellulose they use for products that's renewable. The forest is NOT renewable in less than 400 years. Then it probably won't be the same type of tree or foliage or be inhabited by the same animal, insect or microbial foundation IF it can happen at all. But words like "renewable" are an advertisement ploy; there's no such thing in real earth ecology, just business.

And mostly they want to clear cut and replace it with a monoculture. When I grew up in forested Ohio it was a mostly hardwood deciduous. Our forest was comprised of oak, maple, beech, ash, cherry and poplar. When they cut the forest they replaced it with rows of white pine. It is just not the same.

This is not the first time that the powers that be have gone after this old growth forest... a friend of mine back in the day did a documentary/report on the a rare species, I want to say a pine martin.... who's habitat twas exclusive to the northern part of the state... but it has been many years... I'm going to have to dig, that could be a start.
