Ashland to be site of public hearing on senate mining bill

http://www.ashlandwi.com/news/article_cc6d7d94-56ac-11e1-9ac9-0019bb2963f4.html

A bill on permitting iron ore mining has several provisions that are very different from a bill passed by the State Assembly last month has been released by the State Senate.

The bill will be the subject of a public hearing to be held next week, probably in Ashland

The non-partisan Legislative Council’s review finds a few major differences in the senate bill. First, 70% of taconite profits tax plus a $2 per ton of iron ore sold will go to a local impact fund to be distributed to area communities. The Assembly bill was 60% and did not have a $2 per ton fee.

Also, the bill gives the DNR a 360-day timeline to decide on a permit. That’s the same as the Assembly bill but the Senate version can be extended in unlimited 30-day chunks, if the DNR and company both agree.
