Canada’s Liberal Party backs legalization of marijuana

MONTREAL — Canada’s Liberal Party overwhelmingly passed a motion Sunday proposing the legalization of marijuana on the last day of its national convention, at which Michael Crawley was chosen as its new leader.

The motion says that, if elected, a Liberal government “will legalize marijuana and ensure the regulation and taxation of its production, distribution and use, while enacting strict penalties for illegal trafficking, illegal importation and exportation, and impaired driving.”

Under the motion, the Liberals also promised an amnesty for all Canadians previously found guilty of simple or minimal possession of marijuana and to clear the offenses from their criminal records.

The motion passed with 77 percent of the vote.

1. Overwhelming support for legalization of pot is a no-brainer.

I hand it to the Libs on this one: If they put forth anyone other than Ignatief (where is he now?), or Bob Rae (who will not win 1 seat in Ontario) then they have a winning strategy. (As an NDP'er, I wish they'd do the same; policy-wise). All the power to 'em. Not only would it be a boon to many Canadian's who smoke pot (I'm not one of 'em, but I support their right to smoke), but it would also eviscerate a large portion of Harper's crime omnibus bill. The amnesty part is excellent too.

The only concern that I have (and my typical concern of Liberals) is the notion of 'tax and regulate', which sounds to me like 'cash-grab and shitty weed'. Just legalize the shit, and let anyone grow it who wants to. I despise the authoritarian state, but I equally despise the pseudo nanny-cash-grab state.
