Don’t fire Mountie over affair, says lawyer

VANCOUVER—An RCMP constable who had a sexual relationship with her superior officer should not face being fired while her boss is only docked 10 days’ pay, an RCMP conduct board heard Wednesday.

Constable Susan Gastaldo is before5 the board after being found guilty of disgraceful conduct on the job. Gastaldo and her boss Staff-Sgt. Travis Pearson, who was also found guilty, had sex in a police cruiser while on duty and inappropriately used RCMP equipment to communicate with each other.

Pearson was sentenced earlier this month to 10 days loss of pay — the equivalent of about $4,000, Gastaldo’s lawyer Larry McGonigal said Wednesday.

“One guy loses $4,000 and the other person loses their job,” said McGonigal. He said the loss for Gastaldo, who has been an officer for 14 years, could include loss of promotions, benefits and future earnings.
