Harper's former comm chief, Dimitri Soudas, appointed party's Exec. Director

OTTAWA—A member of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s inner circle has been tabbed to run the Conservative Party. Dimitri Soudas has been given the job of the party’s executive director.

A Conservative party source tells The Canadian Press that the decision was made Friday night at a meeting of party brass at 24 Sussex Dr.

Soudas confirmed the appointment but declined an interview request, saying it was no longer his role to take questions from the media.

Hmmm. A secret, private meeting, to appoint a hardline Harper loyalist to a key party position. How undemocratic. How classically Harper.

Soudras would be well-placed to sniff out and punish any dissenters, and hobble any would-be challengers to Harper's leadership.
