Ukraine’s crackdown singling out Catholics, Canada’s religious-freedom envoy says Add to ...

Canada’s ambassador for religious freedom warns the Ukrainian government is targeting one particular group of Catholics for persecution as the political crises grows in this European country.

Ambassador Andrew Bennett, who visited Kiev Saturday and Sunday, said he’s also upset that new laws placing limits on civil rights will disallow churches from joining protests against the government in Ukraine’s capital city.

The USA counters demonstrations as milquetoast as "Occupy" with force. Now suppose "Occupy" was armed and dedicated to the overthrow of the US gov't. Think about it before auto-judging the Ukraine.

I probably have some distant relatives there. My dad's family was Greek Catholic, from Ukraine a few generations ago. My grandmother still writes with some of them. I don't understand much except some want to join the EU and some would prefer a Russian deal. I don't doubt why some dislike Russia has to do with decades of oppression. But I also don't think Ukraine should do any deals with the right wing (tied to the EU deal). Tough one, but there's no excuse for violence on the part of the government. No excuse at all.
