Stupidity outbreak mars Harper’s visit

What a relief. Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Whitehorse yesterday and shared with the territory a fresh insight: the plight of missing and murdered aboriginal women in Canada is not, in fact, a “sociological phenomenon.” Rather, the root of the problem is that we simply haven’t locked enough people away in prison.

“We should view it as crime,” Harper said. “It is crime against innocent people, and it needs to be addressed as such.”

Well, that makes things much tidier, doesn’t it?

No need to fret over the toxic brew that contributes to the many troubles faced by Canada’s aboriginal communities: high unemployment, rife substance abuse, overcrowded housing, low education levels, not to mention the terrible traumas inflicted during residential schools that continue to be passed from one generation to the next, and so forth.

You would think that if the social conditions of aboriginal women had any bearing on their well-being, it would be incumbent upon Canadian governments to actually improve the situation. Thankfully, it’s only a matter of hunting down those bloody criminals.

What a remarkably stupid position for the prime minister to take. ...

2. I've had friends say he's our own George Bush

Though I sometimes think he's more cunning than Bush. But whether by ignorance or by intent, he's just as destructive.

something like a cross between Cheney and Bush. But he isn't so smart, him threatening Russia... What with? what are we going to do, tow our burnt up navy ships and sunken subs up there?

4. I completely agree

about him being a hybrid of Bush and the demon. (Kind of like Candyman... I'm afraid to say his name too many times.)

I haven't yet delved closely enough into Harper's escapades to decide whether he's a true sociopath or just a self-righteous religiously zealous asshole. Doesn't really matter, as the end result is much the same.

I recently returned to Canada after a long absence and can't wait to vote again. I cried when he was reelected. I hope I can celebrate next year.

5. Don't I know it.

I feel absolutely brutalized over the last 2 elections. Harper winning the federal with a 38% majority which is ridiculous. Then Christy Clark winning the BC election. I felt like I was punched in the gut with that one, and the feeling has not passed. She is the female version of Harper, stupider than he is but smart enough to surround herself with effective advisors.

I told the federal NDP when they called looking for money that I wouldn't give them a cent more unless they get together and do something with the liberals so they don't split the vote again. We simply cannot afford another round of Harper.

6. Strategic voting

Even years ago I thought this was a good idea. I've lived in a couple of heavily contested ridings, and while I understand everyone is running to win, it always infuriated me with the Liberals and NDP refused to cooperate.

I'm now living in Bob Rae's former riding, and if he were still MP, I'd probably vote for him. (This despite the fact that I haven't yet forgiven him for booting Peter Kormos out of provincial cabinet. That's a long grudge, isn't it?) I'll have to see who's running for the NDP next time round. From what I can tell, though, this is a pretty secure Liberal riding.

Provincially we seem to be doing okay. I'm just grateful the province didn't fall to conservative again. Andrea Horvath, however, was god-awful during the election, and I'm not surprised the NDP did so badly.

The next big concern here, of course, is the mayoral election. WTF is wrong with the people who keep giving Rob Ford a pass???? If you haven't seen it, you should watch the Daily Show segment where Jessica Williams tries to find out just how much crack a major has to smoke before Torontonians get upset. It's both funny and sad.
