Habitat for Humanity seeks to break cycle of poverty

Six-year-old Braxton Blight sat on the steps of his brand-new home, chocolate chip cookie in hand. When asked what he was most excited about, he said smiling, “I can’t wait to pick my own room.”

Habitat for Humanity presented four low-income families with keys to their Haultain Crossing homes, in Regina’s Eastview area, on Tuesday.

“This is the No. 1 reason why I applied — because we need a safe place for us to call home. We need something long-term, because (before) we moved around from place to place … It feels great to know that my children have a forever-type home,” said Aleesa Blight, mother of Braxton and his six-month-old sister Selena.

“It’s amazing to see the impact on the families … To hear their stories … What they think about partnering with Habitat and how it’s going to change their futures,” said Kelly Holmes-Binns, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Regina.

Low-income candidates may purchase the home with no down payment and an interest-free mortgage. Payments are a maximum of 25 per cent of the gross household income.
