Police launch probe after large snake found in Greenock (in the west of Scotland)

Picture reveal snakes on the loose in Greenock

GREENOCK residents have been left rattled after two huge snakes were discovered in the town.

Walkers spotted one on the hillside at The Cut and another was found just across the road from the Broomhill Tavern pub, pictured.

Pictures emerged on social media of a workman at the scene of the unusual find on Drumfrochar Road.

It is not known how the animals came to be roaming free in the town and at least one of them was lifeless when discovered.

The Tele has contacted the council, police and the SSPCA.

The SSPCA said it had not yet received a report of the find.

Police launch probe after large snake found in Greenock

POLICE have launched an investigation following today's bizarre discovery of a huge snake just off a busy Greenock street.

The Tele reported this afternoon that it was one of two that had been discovered.

It was found just off Drumfrochar Road, opposite the Broomhill Tavern pub.

Another was reportedly spotted lying dead on the hillside at The Cut.

Reports were then made of a third snake discovered on land behind the fire station in Gourock.

Local police tonight say they have recovered one, approximately 14' long.

It is alive and currently being examined and cared for at a local veterinary practice.

Police said there had been a number of other similar reports relating to snakes being spotted in the local community.

This explanation is just a rumour on Facebook at the moment, but ...

At the moment, our cat and I are glad the Clyde's between us and Greenock.

Hang on. Does anyone know if snakes of this size can swim?

Seriously, though, I hope they manage to round all the poor things up before they die.

And I mean ALL of them.

I have no wish to have a snake anywhere near me, but what happened to them is very cruel.

As far as is known at the moment, it was a solitary escapee. Sadly, it succumbed to the cold despite the vet's best efforts.

The Burmese python went viral after pictures and videos were shared by workers who found the reptile in Greenock.
...
There had been rumours of multiple snakes in the town but it is understood no other reports have been received.
...
Chief Inspector Paul Cameron, Local Area Commander for Inverclyde, said: "We have traced the owner of a large snake found on Tuesday, 2 February, in Greenock.

"Footage of this animal was posted to social media and it is currently with a vet.

"No criminality has been identified in relation to this at present and enquiries are ongoing."

OWNER Of Escaped 15-Foot Python Has Confirmed No Other Snakes Are Missing

POLICE have confirmed that no more snakes are thought to be on the loose in Greenock.

A 15-foot python was found behind Broomhill Bar in Drumfrochar Road, yesterday.

The owner of the snake has been identified. No members of the public were injured.

The snake was uplifted by staff from housing association River Clyde Homes and held at their depot in Springkell Street where it was later collected by a vet but the BBC report that the snake has since died.

Police last night said they were investigating reports of a number of snake sightings but Sergeant Jason Logsdon confirmed today: “No other snakes are reported as missing or stolen.”

And a slightly more alarming headline:

Giant snake loose in Greenock was Burmese python that swallows pigs and goats whole
