A question about the English subtitles on an English language sketch...who were they meant for?

3. Maybe for those who are not used to following everything in an English accent

but are able to read it.

Here in the UK I remember back in 2002 a couple of American girls at dance classes, one from CT and the other from MN, having difficulty understanding everything the teacher said with his english accent.

4. I've never seen a mainstream English program subtitled in English.

I don't recall the original show having subtitles.

I agree that some accents are hard to understand. My favourite was Jack Charlton as expert commentator on a football game on radio (so no chance of subtitles there) many years ago. After about 10 minutes, the main commentator invited Jack to provide his insight into proceedings. Jack came out with something like "Ee bobbitt poly gruny boot cromity aardvark football". The main commentator's reaction was telling. About 5 seconds silence (otherwise known as an eternity) followed by "Thank you, Jack".

I seem to recall this was Jack's first appearance as a pundit and he had slipped into his local dialect rather than his "English" voice - which is still pretty heavily accented. He got better (after all, he hadn't been changed into a newt).

The only time I've seen English subtitles on English text is when the speaker is non-English and has a difficult to understand accent.
