David Cameron has mounted a robust patriotic defence after the spokesman for Vladimir Putin reprtedly said the UK was a small island to which no one listened. At a briefing with reporters in St Petersburg, the British prime minister went into overdrive in defence of the UK.
Without pausing for breath he told reporters: "We have been told that the Russians absolutely deny making the remark, and certainly no one's made it to me. But let me be clear Britain may be a small island, but I would challenge anyone to find a country with a prouder history, a bigger heart or greater resilience.

I can't abide Cameron and his Alf Garnett view of history, so I would suggest two more suitable answers to Putin's spokesman.
Long answer: We may be a small island, but the vote from the British Parliament was instrumental in derailing the planned American attack on Syria, so the second part doesn't really stand up.
Short answer: Screw you.

(2,863 posts)No wonder Putin finds him so laughable
Of course, the big joke is hat what the Russians are rumoured to have said is also what Obama and the US administration are thinking.
The UK is only valued for the vote they cast on the UN security council not for its military prowess or the wisdom of its statesmen.
Unfortunately, most British politicians don't seem to realise that simple fact

(41,205 posts)nonetheless Cameron is a serious twerp. I am tempted to take him up on setting his lyrics to music, but is there any music bland enough?
And many Brits do have big hearts, but those of Cameron's Cabinet Ministers are mostly three sizes too small!

(41,205 posts)We may be just a small island, and we may be infested by Iain Duncan-Smith, but we are just about as far away as possible from Tony Abbott! And just about as far away as possible from Tony Abbott is where I like to be!

(14,737 posts)I really don't envy the Australians. Rudd and Abbott are even worse party leaders then the dross we've got right now.
It's like having an election between Godfrey Bloom and Denis MacShane.

(41,205 posts)They were indulging in their own infighting to the n'th degree instead of fighting the real enemy. Reminds me of how the British Labour Party infighting helped to keep Thatcher in power in the 80s. At least the infighting here in the 80s was to some extent about real policy issues; whereas (as far as I can see from here) the Australian Labor infighting was mostly about personalities and power-seeking. Which, when your opponent is a cross between Nigel Farage and Rick Santorum, is REALLY a case of fiddling while Canberra burns!

(2,863 posts)If Britain is a small island of no consequence why are the Russians going to the point of mentioning it rather than simply ignoring us. The truth is that in international politics people rarely bother wasting words on things or people they think are of no relevance. Cameron just looks stupid rising to the bait with all his blathering about our cultural heritage etc.
