British workers left unprotected says Labour as immigration row deepens

The government has failed to introduce measures to protect the rights of low-skilled British workers whose jobs may be threatened by new migrants from eastern Europe, a Labour shadow minister has claimed.

As Britain opened its borders to Bulgarian and Romanian workers on New Year's day, David Hanson, the shadow immigration minister, said the government has ignored calls to strengthen existing legislation that could stop employers from undercutting British employees' wages by recruiting from abroad.

His comments came as the first Romanians and Bulgarians with unrestricted access to the UK labour market began to arrive amid a deepening political row.

All political parties are aware that the possibility of high numbers of new migrants has become a major issue, fuelled by unproven claims that the new arrivals could lead to a rise in crime and social problems.

Romanians landing at Luton airport on Wednesday were greeted by the home affairs select committee chairman, Keith Vaz, who said they provided just a "snapshot" of those expected to come to the country over the coming months.

An oddity here :

Hundreds of thousands from outside EU could head for UK in passport loophole

Hundreds of thousands from outside the EU will be eligible to work in Britain from today because of a passport giveaway by Bulgaria and Romania.

It will give some of the poorest in Europe the right to live and work here.

Bulgaria and Romania are offering national status to minority or ethnic groups living in non-EU states including Moldova, Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine and Turkey.

They're getting in on the immigration hand-wringing that the Tories, UKIP and BNP excel at.

Just as the RW predictions of "floods" turn out to be race-baiting hyperbole.

The Daily Wail and The Scum send photographers out to bus stations in Eastern Europe where any and all people happening to be travelling somewhere are said to be going to Blighty.
