Skinned VLC won't record for me.

I'm trying to capture a clip from an mp4 and I go to the Advanced Options to select the settings for the record window. Then I hit record and hit it again at the end of the clip. But when I go to access the clip, all I get is the traffic cone icon.

Is there another setting on the skinned version that I'm suppose to hit? Maybe I'm not downloading the right Windows version? I've tried several downloads and I'm pretty sure that I have tried the Windows 7 version, which is what I'm currently using.
