Viewing problems on websites
As of this morning, I can no longer see certain items on websites.
The comment sections of sites I read regularly are no longer visible (2 of them say "powered by Disqus" and any article that has an embedded Tweet or picture is either blank or a black box. There may be other issues that I haven't seen yet.
Everything was okay when I logged off last night and I changed nothing this morning. It doesn't appear that any automatic updates downloaded overnight.
I'm using Windows 7 and Firefox browser (28.0).
Any help would be appreciated.

(2,805 posts)Was just complaining about the words "Powered by Disqus" appearing on her blog. Those are just a credit to Disqus for using their commenting system much like if you see a photo on a site and it says "Photo-courtesy of AP". It is a style issue and Disqus deserves the credit for those using its commenting system.
Ghostery is usually the culprit for hiding comments on webpages in my experience. If you use that plugin try left-clicking the Ghost icon and select to Pause Blocking and reload the page see if your comments appear. If they do then you need to left click again and allow Disqus. There are other commenting systems--too so if some sites still don't load comments you have to allow the various trackers on that site until you find the one responsible for showing the comments.
I allow Disqus and for sites that use a strange commenting system I am not familiar with and where I want to read the comments, I use the IE View Lite addon which allows you to right-click a webpage and select to View This Page in IE. The page will open in IE which has no blockers and I close IE when I am done. Not the most efficient way but it works with out much fuss.

(37,457 posts)Do NOT uninstall Firefox. Just run the installation program again. That will tend to fix any problems with it. If a setting goes wonky, just go into preferences and reset it afterwards. This will not delete your cookies or saved sites, etc.

(7,784 posts)same. But then I tried Safe mode without add-ons and it was normal again.
I only have 2 add-ons that I've had forever, Ad Block and Avast Security. I'm confused
ETA: It's Avast that's suddenly causing the problem. But I'm not disabling that, so I guess I'll have to just wait and see if it gets fixed.
Thank you for your help.

I removed every threat. Thanks so much for that link, it's obviously better than the Malware I was using which gave me a clean report! How often should I run this?

(2,805 posts)If it doesn't fix itself two solutions that might be an option are:
1) A comment by Hardley about 10 from the last comment show changing a setting in Avast. http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2014/01/if-you-cant-see-disqus-comments.html
2) This setting in the Avast plugin: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/975592?page=2
I can't verify either solution but since the Mozilla thread spans several months, I am thinking that Avast may not fix it on its own.
definitely Avast. Thanks for those links.

(7,784 posts)Avast add on, so I'll just have to wait until they fix it or update again. Other than disabling it, nothing works.
But at least I know the problem now and that it's not just me. And I'm grateful for the input, I would have spent days trying to determine the problem. And thank you so much for the super antispyware - I can't believe what it found
Forgot to add - I will just use IE when I find a site that has something blocked. There are only a few of my regular reading spots that seem to be affected, so I can deal with it until FF works again.
