Continue using XP for newsgroup perusal. Safe or not?

I have a 14 year old workhorse that I've had XP pro on for some time now, and I use that computer only for dipping into newsgroups. I got the latest updates a few days ago. Can anyone comment on how vulnerable I am if I'm not opening an internet browser? I use MacBook for the internet.

90% of the scare hype about XP is just trying to get you to spend money on a new system that most people won't need for some time.
Safe browsing habits do more for security than anything else.
