After getting netflix on my computer, suddenly cannot - problem with MS "silverlight"

I have an old computer, bought in 2006.
I need a new one, bec. this one is slow, and lacks many features.
But now is not a good time for me to buy a new one, so I wonder if there is a fix for this problem.
it is a Dell desk top, and my OP is windows XP,
which as we know, is no longer supported by MS.

for several months I got Netflix no problem - (browser - Firefox).
Suddenly when I went to Netflix, it said,"You must install MS Silverlight", so I installed it.

I am not very computer-literate, so my brother checked that, yes, it is installed.
Still - no netflix.
When I called MS, they said the silverlight wouldn't work; I must get a new computer, and he helpfully suggested that I shop the sales on Black Friday.

This may be true.
But I'd like to know I have exhausted all options before I buy a new computer.

any ideas?

thanks.

Last summer I replaced an 80 year old relative's XP computer (Dell 2003) with a REBUILT Windows 7 computer.

He used the old one for crossword puzzles from USA Today, for playing card games on-line, and for email and storing photos of his grandchildren.

When the card game application wouldn't work anymore, that was okay with him. When the crossword puzzle application broke and needed me to fix it twice month that was okay for a while, but then I couldn't fix it one day. When he couldn't open the files with pictures of grandchildren he nearly had a heart attack. (Luckily, I had backed up all of the old pictures (about 400 of them) onto a single flash drive just a few weeks before the melt-down.)

So I shopped on-line and bought a 2010 Dell windows computer through a Best Buy on-line refurbished computer dealership in Ohio, (I am in New England). You pay Best Buy, the supplier ships the computer, and gets paid when Best Buy knows the computer was delivered and in good working order. The refurbished computer is just like new, it might even be new and never sold before, I could not tell.

The price of the refurbished Windows 7 with 4 GB RAM was $289. delivered.

I set it up in an hour, had his pictures loaded onto the new computer, his card game application working, his crossword puzzle application working, and even the speakers for his music application working, after 2 year of him not having music to play while doing his crossword puzzles.

The problems with old XP computers are many, and they often have only 2 GB RAM, which is not adequate for many new versions of applications.

I told him to bite the bullet. A $300 replacement will work for several years, (it may even outlive him!)

Now, he spends 2-3 hours a day on his computer again, and he's a happy man, not angry that his computer isn't working at all for him every other week, as he was last summer with the old XP. How much is happiness worth when you're 80? Don't spend hours and hours and hours of your life having your computer short-change your free time.

He bought the old XP new in about 2003, for $1,200 !!! When I told him he could get a replacement computer for $300 he was shocked at the cheap price.

Search around on Google for refurbished computers, or do a search on Best Buy narrowing the search down to machines with Windows 7 operating system. (I recommend it over Windows 8 because 8 is too difficult for someone older to get used to after XP ...Windows 7 looks about the same as XP and is much faster and relatively glitch free.

One final note: it's the Christmas rush, so shopping for something like this on-line is probably not the best time of year to be doing it. Expect delays or short inventory, with better delivery times and more inventory in January, but then again, why wait, unless you need to save up for it.

I just did a search on Best Buy for Windows 7 Dell machines with 4 GB RAM... here is one for $129 !!

this: I hate windows 8. I know W.7 can be found but one must search for it. I was not/am not looking forward to this endeavor.

so thank you for this suggestion, I will look into it soon as I get back.

I appreciate yr post, and any info I receive - bec. going into the store and being surrounded by flashing lights, and lots of noise and knowing little about computers.- makes it difficult. It's something I dread doing.

I am 67, not as old as yr relative, but old enough, that digitals are not second nature to me, as they are to the next generation.

I think it's great that yr relative is able to use and enjoy the computer.
My father is 94 and he just got himself a lap tap.

this computer that I have has been inadequate for a long time and just gets more inadequate. And when my computer guy told me there was to way to increase memory or increase speed, I knew it was time.

He is gold, has kept it working, he cleans it, but ultimately it is too old.

Someone I know, who is same age as me, but totally computer-literate decided to get a computer so he could write his book. so he went into a Staples and got a sold a very expensive deal - I can't remember everything they sold him, but it cost over $1000. And it had windows 8. when he asked me to tutor him, didn't realize it was w.8 till I got to his place. I tried. I read books. but I could not master W.8. One factor of course is that I've been using W.xp for 10 years, but also I did a lot of research and the consensus of most computer experts is that W. 8 sucks.

And the info on the seller, I think it's the same place I bought about the same model for over twice the price in July.

http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx

When I go there with Firefox it says this at the top of the screen:
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The version of Silverlight installed is:
Silverlight 5 (5.1.30514.0)

You are ready to use Microsoft Silverlight

-----------------------------------------------------------------

There are also two other tabs on that page "System Requirements" tab and "Uninstall Silverlight"

You could try using Chrome as a browser to see if it will work with that.

I had problems with Silverlight and Netflix a few years ago and had to uninstall Silverlight and then reinstall it. Computers are quirky I would give that a shot.

One last thing you could try is cross posting on the DU Netflix Group (link below) to see if others have any ideas there.

and didn't understand.
but seeing that you had had problems with SL and Netfl. and were able to solve them, I will ask my computer guy to give it a go.
He will charge me $40., and it may not work, but if I can put off buying a computer until I'm out of the hole I'm in, that would be a benefit.
if he can't solve problem, I'll look into the links provided by JD Davis.

thanks - you all have been most helpful!
