Need info about modem
Thanks for all the info about router but now it looks like I need a modem.
Lady from internet service says they have Motorola or Aris one for $50 and says other places cost more.
What should I get?

(37,457 posts)If you own your own modem, you typically save money on your monthly bill because you're not renting a cable modem. Make sure this modem is compatible with your ISP. It probably is, but just make sure.

(27,509 posts)I got my sb 6142 at Costco for $75, if suddenlink is offering it for $50 that's a good deal.
The sb 6121 is an older model, most isps including suddenlink are phasing them out and won't let you add one.
Here's the list of approved modems for suddenlink:

My cable company is Time Warner, modems with 8 downstream channels are limited to 100 mbps even though they should be able to handle 340 mbps. Don't know if suddenlink has similar restrictions. For most of us it's not an issue.

(1,524 posts)I have one myself and have gotten them for my parents and brother. As bananas said, $50 is a good price for it. (Do make sure that they're selling it to you and aren't still going to charge you monthly rental on top of it)

(15,882 posts)called a "cable modem".
Dial up phone lines use a box called a modem. It is older technology, and almost always slower. I mean agonizingly slower.
So it is important to find out if you are accessing through cable, or through your telephone lines.
If it is the latter, find another wa- ok, I kid. But it is a different experience, so make sure there isn't another option unless this is done on purpose.
Then ask your provider what equipment works best with their provisioning, whatever it is.

(15,882 posts)I thought most cable modems would be in the >100 range, but coming from companies like this it is hard to tell.
Motorola screwed me on a modem in the good old days, I always look to other brands now, and that has helped me find better.
I did a quick google and it looks like the arris is in a motorola box...
