Need help! Samsung S20 causing my router to crash (updated)

My google-fu is failing on this one.

My kid just got a new phone, an unlocked, refurbished S20, in the mail today.

He's having an issue with connecting to the WiFi. He knows the password and SSID, but when he connects to the WiFi, the entire router crashes within 5 seconds.

The router normally has four white LEDs on it. When he turns his phone's WiFi on and connects, the power LED turns red and all the other LEDs go dark. Anything connected to it, whether hardwired or on WiFi, loses internet. It seems to restart, reconnect to his phone again, then does a crash and reset. Rinse and repeat.

Once he turns his phone's WiFi off the router comes back and behaves normally... four white LEDs.

The router is a D-Link DIR-1950.

I even logged into the router and told him to turn his WiFi on while I monitored the devices connected to the router; I was never able to see his phone before the router crashed.

All the help on the internet seems to be with fixing WiFi issues with the phone; no mention of causing the router to crash.

Anybody have any clue? Can I change a setting on my router?

The phone wants to do a software update but... get this... it will only do it over WiFi. I have unlimited data through T-Mobile but the phone won't download the update except over WiFi.

Pretty sure this is the definition of a Catch-22: Your problem of not getting on the WiFi can only be fixed if you've gotten onto the WiFi.

Update: my kid was able to hook up to his school's WiFi and update his phone without any issues. Still crashing my router though.!

If your router is crashing, the first thing to check is that its firmware is current!

3. Check the router system log to see if it shows any error that explains why it reboots.

(Hopefully it doesn't erase the log when it resets.)

Also see if there is a way to monitor the amount of network data going through the router. Watch it and connect the Samsung S20 to see if it maxes out prior to rebooting.

You might also try disconnecting all other devices from the router temporarily as a test and just connect the Samsung S20 to verify it is the phone, and the phone alone, causing the problem.

Does the phone give any info on its connection status during the attempt? Is it set to get an address from the network? If so, are there enough address available from the network?

I would try the Samsung S20 on another wireless network to see what happens (of course you probably want to be friends with the owner of the other WiFi network and inform them what exactly you are testing). Or just borrow another router for troubleshooting (if possible).

Kind of a weird problem. I don't know anything about the Android OS, if I did then I might be more helpful.

...for some reason. I'll see if my PC can show it. It's probably just a text file.

There are plenty of WiFi addresses available. His old phone went on the WiFi okay, and he's stopped using that one in favor of the S20.

He successfully used his school's WiFi to update his phone without crashing their system.

I'm sure it's his new phone. No doubt about that. The network data idea is interesting. I'll have to try that.
