why am I getting stuck on the splash screen

I keep having to turn my computer off and on again a number of times and sometimes it won't go past the splash screen. This is a new HP pavilion desktop.

When are they going to start making computers that work properly?

Can you boot in safe mode? What OS are you using?

The Internet Explorer version doesn't tell me much. At some point, you probably will have to turn it off. So when you get to a stopping point, you might as well try it, and see if you can do a restart. First, I would suggest trying to get into your BIOS settings--Holding down a PF key (usually F1, F2, or F8 on most systems--it should tell you which one onscreen) as you reboot will get you in, and you can look at your bootup settings. Verify that it's recognizing your boot drive and memory, and you can set it to do a full POST (Power-On Self-Test) which will help you identify start-up problems. Exit and save any changes you make, then restart again, and watch as it goes thru the POST and boot sequence. Try booting into safe mode (again, it should tell you during the start-up how to do it with the PF keys.) See if it runs OK in safe mode, then get back to us, and we'll go from there.

We gotta do the basic stuff first, it's the quickest/easiest way to fix problems, in my experience.

you need the Win7 installation disk for this.

If this doesn't help you, you might do internet searches for "windows 7 bootup problems".

Hope this helps!

the whole box, especial in the back (should have at least 4-6" space) and the bottom.

If on a carpeted floor, put a 1 x 2 x 3/4 piece of wood (width of box) under the front and be sure the air intake is clear. On a wood surface make sure the bottom bumpers haven't been knocked off. Need at least 1/4 in space. I usually go to the hardware store and get some table leg coasters to raise the box up to 1/2 in.

Turn system off overnight and let it cool down. Then make adjustments

System needs to be off before you start lifting or pulling cords (could cause a disk head crash if running).

Is this the Windows splash screen or the HP splash screen?

If it is Windows then do a chkdsk to look for file corruption. Computer>right-click the C: drive and select Properties>Tools tab>Error Checking>Check Now>tick both boxes hit Start button. It will schedule for next boot up. Let it run and see if it loads correctly.

If HP screen that indicates a Hardware problem usually the HD or optical drive is not being recognized. I have to say I have only seen this cause a hang on a laptop, most desktops just move right along and report that the troublesome device was not found.
