you cannot add it to your current cell/data plan. You buy 3g upfront via a credit or debit card.

This is how it was last year... you may want to call them and see if they have any discounts since you are an existing customer.

The upside of the iPad data plan is you don't have to pay it every month, only the months you wish to use it. With no data plan, it still works just fine as a WiFi unit.

I have a WiFi-only iPad and a 3G iPad2. The reality is I have almost never felt the need for the 3G, although I do admit I use it, but that's mainly because I have it. I have the lowest level ATT plan, which is 250 MB per month. I have never gotten close because I use it for some light duty internet connecting and email. On the other hand, an hour of streaming video gets to about 1GB and will eat up your data plan in a heartbeat.

With the proliferation of hotspots in my two urban areas (Baltimore and DC) and the surrounding suburbs, I have always been able to connect when I want to.

I'd advise thinking long and hard about whether you need the data plan or not.
