second hard drive (external) was part of a laptop so has the operating system

Ok I know it has the operating system - when would I want to use it? How would I bring it up - it has usb to attach to current computer - the other motherboard died. - How would I update the software with latest fixes? Can I have both on this laptop and have both systems up?

Unless the laptop it was on is identical to the new one, it most likely won't work. hobbit709 Jan 2012 #1

Best thing to do is remove all data to another drive and then format it to get rid of the OS-that will free up a lot of space.
