First, Forget about Java, for now at least. (probably something you can do without for a while).

2) Let's deal with Skype only.

If the application fails to install, or fades out to nothing after attempting a "security scan", there's probably a security hole in your computer, either a virus or some mal-ware.

Do a full virus AND an full maleware scan of your computer. Something is holding up Skype from installing.

Be sure to use a good anti-virus program and a good anti-maleware scanning program.

After that is done, (it may take 20 min or more for each), then download a FRESH compy of Skype software installer onto your computer and use the FRESH copy of the installer.

i recommend firefox with the 'DownThemAll!' add-on. DownThemAll is just a download manager but it's a great one.

when you download the installers for Java update and Skype, do 'save to file...' (or using downthemall!) then open your download manager, right click and 'show in folder...' (or just go into your 'downloads' folder and find them).

once you can see the installers listed on your harddrive, right-click on them and do 'run as administrator...' and say 'yes' and 'run' to the dialogs.

if this doesn't work lemme know there may be something else going on..
