Woooo I have a new laptop
It's an ASUS X502C series. Nothing fancy, I like it so far. But I don't like Windows at all.
On my old laptop, I was using Puppy Linux. I used Mint for a while and was happy with it, but it crashed for no apparent reason, so I went back to Puppy.
I'm so naiive, I don't even know what you are supposed to do first. I know what *not* to do: purchase the Norton antivirus shit they try to sell you.
Should I bother to try and learn Windows 8?

(4,726 posts)Slap VirtualBox on there, or VMWare if you're feeling spendy, image your current drive, and Bob's your uncle. (Or, perish the thought, virtualize Linux...the Win kernel itself is good enough as a host and with modern hardware and plenty of RAM you shouldn't get a performance hit..)

(3,270 posts)because learning something new is always a good idea.
And - Because you may actually like it. You already got it; may as well drive it around the block a few times.
Or - It will make you love your favorite Linux distro *THAT* much more!
I've found that Win 8 is usually a "love it" or "hate it" relationship... I find that Linux people usually tend to "hate it".
If you like what they have done with iOS 7.. you will feel right at home on Win 8.
If you would ever consider putting an Apple Logo sticker on your vehicle or getting a tattoo of said logo... then you will not like it or anything produced by Microsoft.

(5,849 posts)I thought at one time this group had a pinned thread on best freeware. Do people still like Gizmo's Freeware website ? Is Mozilla Firefox still considered one of the better web browsers? I feel like I've been out of the loop for so long.

(12,471 posts)Those who know that Windows 8 is actually version 6.2. Windows version 6.0 was Vista, Windows Seven was version 6.1, and Windows Eight is version 6.2.
It's unbelievable that people will buy this crap. Personally, I call it Vista, warmed over, or warmed over a couple of times. You know what you get when you patch poop with poop, don't you?
Yeah, windows pays my bills, so I guess I shouldn't complain, but it is quite the buggy hog, if you ask me.

(9,610 posts)and many others are all based off of Debian. Why not just stick with the "Daddy" distro.?
*Disclaimer-I have been known to use other "easy setup" distros on some of my devices. My primary systems are all Debian though.
