Upgrading to Wireless N from Wireless G worth it?
The router we have at home is what we got from AT&T when we installed U-Verse at our old home. It's now over two years old and uses Wireless G technology, which I know was not exactly new when we got it.
If we got a new router from AT&T that uses the newer Wireless N technology, would that help with things like video streaming and/or using online gaming? I think our service from AT&T is 18 Mbps.
Thanks

(49,533 posts)G's speeds are already greater than your Internet uplink, so an upgrade on your internal speed won't do anything. Where N really shines, I have found, is signal strength. I used to have to use a repeater to get my wifi to all parts of my house and the backyard. When I upgraded my main router to an N device, I no longer needed that.
that was helpful - our signal isn't as strong downstairs as it is upstairs, so that might make a difference.

(9,314 posts)and when I switched from Wireless G to Wireless N my speeds went from 15mbps to 35mbps on my desktop. On my laptop connecting via wireless it went from about 6 to 20mbps. My Kindle connects much quicker, too.
So, yes, it was worth it to me.

(41,694 posts)doesn't matter how fast your network speed is if your internet connection is slow. Even the G 54mbps is way faster than the internet connection of 18 mbps.
