Web Around the World: Whose Internet’s The Fastest?

Web Around the World: Whose Internet’s The Fastest?

While Bolt’s homeland has helped Cuba, the country with the lowest online connectivity rates in the Western Hemisphere, connect to its faster fiber-optic cable network, other places around the world are surfing online with lightning bolt speed.

A “quick” look at the top places in the world for fastest Internet connection shows Mr. Bolt would have to sprint outside the realm of the United Kingdom. The U.K. just misses out in the top 10 in a Bloomberg report, ranking 12th worldwide.

The top 10, according to Flanders Today, includes:

1) South Korea, 13.7 megabits per second
2) Hong Kong, 9.4 Mbps
3) Japan, 8.3 Mbps
4) Romania 7.0 Mbps
5) Netherlands, 7.0 Mbps
6) Latvia, 5.9 Mbps
7) Czech Republic, 5.7 Mbps
8 ) Switzerland, 5.6 Mbps
9) Belgium, 5.5 Mbps
10) Canada, 5.5 Mbps

My Internet connection measures out as very fast, but for the past couple of months, some sites have been painfully slow. I think that most of that is due to sites loading up on advertiser tracking code. If you have 5 tracking widgets, there is a pretty good chance that one of the 5 will be running slow at any moment. However, I don't think Google search pages should have that problem. But it seems like a lot of Google searches now take 10 seconds when they used to be instantaneous.

Anybody else seeing this?

... but I'll check it out the next time I do a search. Is it on the Google web page itself? I use Chrome, so I just search from the address bar.

I see it when entering search words into the search box on Thunderbird, which directs to Google search. It could be that my Thunderbird has gotten hosed in recent weeks. Maybe I'll try a different browser for awhile.

I removed all of my add-ons, including the ones that had been installed without my permission. It seems to be running much better now. I think the big offender was Avast anti-virus, which had installed its hooks into Firefox, performing a lookup on every page I browsed to make sure it was safe.
