Does new Maverick OS have a word or excel substitute program?

I was going to install Maverick on my iMac (to replace my 10.6.8 os) but got a message saying my Microsoft Word and Excel programs won't operate in Maverick. I do use those programs occasionally. Are the programs in Maverick that are used to replace Word and Excel?

I am not very techie, I know just enough to do what I need to do on the iMac, so please be understanding if I am asking a really stupid question.

Also, how do the Maverick users like it so far?

Thanks for any help any DU'er can provide.

check out those apps. Do you use them? If so, how similar to M-Word and Excel are they?

I assume your user name means evil bastard, is that right? LOL, clever, but hopefully not an accurate description.

I'm told it's not accurate, but they may be lying.

The apps aren't exact replacements for Word and Excel, but I don't know what your needs are. You could also try OpenOffice, an open source alternative to MS Office. It might be better for you.

. . . . but neither are directly compatible (read/write). Exporting is an interim step after a save command.

It's free and so far I've had no problems with it at all. It does everything I need.

I am not using Maverick, but it would be worth checking out to see if this one is compatible.

Been using OpenOffice for several years, and never had any problems importing Word & Excel or sharing my OpenOffice docs & spreadsheets with M$ Office users. Great work by Apache, and a very valuable public service.

I have iWork, but almost never use those apps.

Get them to lend it to you.

Pages and Numbers available on the App Store are free and worth exactly that. Apple broke the apps when they ported them to the iPad.
