Justice Department To Launch Push For Full Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriage

In an assertion of same-sex marriage rights, Attorney General Eric Holder is applying a landmark Supreme Court ruling to the Justice Department, announcing Saturday that same-sex spouses cannot be compelled to testify against each other, should be eligible to file for bankruptcy jointly and are entitled to the same rights and privileges as federal prison inmates in opposite-sex marriages. The Justice Department runs a number of benefits programs, and Holder says same-sex couples will qualify for them. They include the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and benefits to surviving spouses of public safety officers who suffer catastrophic or fatal injuries in the line of duty.

“In every courthouse, in every proceeding and in every place where a member of the Department of Justice stands on behalf of the United States, they will strive to ensure that same-sex marriages receive the same privileges, protections and rights as opposite-sex marriages under federal law,” Holder said in prepared remarks to the Human Rights Campaign in New York. The advocacy group works on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equal rights.

And we agree that Joe Biden deserves a large share of the credit for accelerating the nation's LGBT progress.

I've never been sure whether he did it accidentally by leaking the President's true feelings about the need to go faster.

Or whether his leak was a premeditated rollout by the White House made to look like an accident.

With the right spirit we can cheerfully clear up any miscommunications here.

Although the BOG is first and foremost an Obama booster group, we have plenty of love to share with others. That's one thing that makes me so proud to be a Democrat - we have many fine ones! I hardly think Biden's mom could love him more than I do. Holder's done a fine job in an often thankless situation, too. In fact, I'd stack the least of ours against the 'best' (??) of theirs.

I stand for gay rights, the same way I stand for women's rights.

I for one will never back down on either issue. We have a right to make decisions about our bodies and an equal right to who we are able to love. Sad that so many wish to take that from us.

Holder gets Such a bad wrap here on DU, I just don't understand. From what I have seen he is a pretty good guy in a really bad job. I guess some want to see banksters feet swinging in the wind 6 years ago.
