Barack Obama
Related: About this forumI'm going to volunteer for PFLAG.
That stands for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. I'll wait until I get back home in about 10 days. I figure if Obama can announce his support for marriage equality, then I can certainly do some volunteer work a day or two a week.
I've been very encouraged since yesterday here on DU. I've seen LGBTQ DUers stand up and say that they've donated to the Obama campaign, and they've joined the Obama campaign, and that they were crying tears of joy. They inspired me. I just figure that if they can come out and say that despite earlier feelings of disappointment that they will work for President Obama's reelection, then I can damned well work for their civil rights, too.
I'll still be volunteering for OFA, of course, my usual 3 or so days a week. This is the election that matters. These are the 4 years we've been waiting for. Let's do everything we can to give Obama a Democratic majority in both houses so we can get our agenda through this time. Because we have to go for broke, no doubt about it. President Obama doesn't have to worry about reelection after this and thankfully Harry Reid doesn't have to worry about another election for a while yet, so perhaps he won't slow us down as much this time.
Speaking of Reid, apparently there might be some movement on ENDA and repealing DOMA this summer, all spurred on by Obama's announcement. And let's don't forget to thank VP Biden, as well. And if you believe it was a gaffe, I have some property somewhere to sell ya...
One more thing. After the election, let's keep working. Let's stay involved in real world politics, in real world outreach. Find your passion as you campaign from now through the election. That passion is what will keep you going. Heh. I'm lecturing myself here, too.
Love you all.

Excellent! You got me thinking.

(4,309 posts)I hadn't heard of PFLAG, but I'll look into it. Seems like a group worth all of our support.
"Let's do everything we can to give Obama a Democratic majority in both houses so we can get our agenda through this time." Yes, yes, yes and yes! I want soooo much for the hope and change we voted for in 2008 to become a reality. With a Dem majority, we can make it happen!
Thanks for getting me energized late on a Thursday night!

(24,544 posts)Agent Frog (that's JTFrog to the rest of y'all) has had their logo as her avatar for years. She is a proud Obama supporter.
A consistently feral Obama hater very infamously tried to cuss her out for that very reason, come to think of it.

(22,541 posts)as her avatar? OMG. That's terrible! Can't win for losing with some people, I guess. Well, all we can do is just keep on keeping on despite them. There's nothing we can do about the hate. But we can do some good, right?
That's why I'm going to campaign my heart out and spend some time volunteering for PFLAG, too. Naysayers won't stop me. They didn't stop Obama, either.
