Police Find Real Blue Meth In Albequerque, NM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Reality in the illegal drug world is mimicking fiction.

Kevin Abar, assistant special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New Mexico, says distributors are selling methamphetamine tinted blue in the Four Corners region.

That mirrors AMC's hit drama "Breaking Bad," which depicted an Albuquerque-based meth operation that cooked up the drug with a blue hue.

Abar says tinting meth blue is a way for distributors to advertise and brand their product.

EVERYONE I see in the paper who is busted for meth is missing half their teeth, wrinkled and zitty at the same time, and they usually look like their own grand paw or maw. Ya look at the picture, you're thinking "Oh, fifty, maybe sixty years old" and then you read the blotter and it says 25 or 30!

One, obviously, it's nasty-ass shit and in a sane world no one would touch it with a 20 foot pole. The best ad against meth is meth users, themselves.

But there are probably several factors; not the least of which is the success of the drug war against "traditional" illegal drugs, in certain parts of this country. It's a cheap buzz that can be put together with crap found at the hardware store, shit like battery acid. Plus never underestimate the capacity of the human animal to seek out intoxicants, even at the cost of significant self-harm.

Lastly, though, and I think this plugs into the meth epidemic, for sure- a lot of the people who are doing it or who at least get started doing it, are not doing it so much to get high, but rather to function and get additional energy to get through a crappy, minimum wage existence. Think about the people holding down 2 or 3 jobs, like the graveyard shift at the bumblefuck mini mart... it's not too hard to see how many of them might see the appeal of a cheap energy rush that will keep them awake. It develops a high cost, and quickly- but by then for a lot of these folks, it's too late.
