Andy Bachman was swapped out for a different Reform rabbi, less than an hour before a roundtable discussion at a Brooklyn church.

NEW YORK – Rabbi Sara Luria wasn’t sure why she was called to participate in a panel discussion on faith and social justice with Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders just 45 minutes before it was to start.

Turns out she was a last-minute substitute for Rabbi Andy Bachman, who was scheduled to participate in the Saturday-night Sanders campaign event at the First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn Heights but was unceremoniously uninvited shortly before it was to begin.


The leading New York rabbi — formerly the spiritual leader of Brooklyn’s Congregation Beth Elohim and now director of Jewish content and community ritual at the 92nd Street Y — was dumped from the program for recent tweets favoring Sanders’ opponent Hillary Clinton.

After he finishes not-winning the Democratic nomination, more than half of his support, and 75% of his online support, will evaporate away. They'll be too busy repopulating the Ron and Rand Paul forums ahead of the GOP convention, angling to get their guy into the Republican nomination somehow.

Bernie Sanders, while falling to the left of the dial, is as flawed and at times politically compromised as any other candidate. His unwillingness to apologize to the Sandy Hook families after voting to give gun manufacturers a liability exemption is particularly unpleasant. He's also voted to support a trillion-dollar Pentagon boondoggle, the F-35 stealth fighter plane being built in Vermont by Lockheed Martin, making his railing against Hillary's Iraq votes (for which she has apologized) somewhat lacking in sincerity.

Hillary's not perfect. But unlike Sanders, she doesn't pretend to be. And that's what it takes to elect Democrats in the South, to the White House and elsewhere – not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
