.............Sanders said that after a brilliant campaign Obama made a mistake by expecting that he could easily negotiate with the other party.
He thought he could walk into Capitol Hill and the Oval Office and sit down with John Boehner and Mitch McConnell and the Republicans and say, I cant get it all. You cant get it all. Lets work out something thats reasonable, because hes a reasonable guy. Hes a pretty rational guy, Sanders said. These guys never had any intention of doing [serious] negotiating and compromising
I think it took the president too long to fully appreciate that.
But Sanders didn't have a firm answer for how he would more successfully broker deals, saying the only way things will actually get done with a divided Congress is if the general population stays engaged in the political process and demand it.

(73 posts)Obama assumed the Republicans would be amenable to him in Congress. Never was the case - and he learned the lesson the hard way.
Bernie knows exactly what he will face with Republicans in Congress (assuming the Democrats hasn't at least retaken one of the chambers or both via Bernie's coattails), and will be prepared, if necessary. Bernie will find a way to get the job done: Bernie has always added many amendments to benefit the people to many bills. That is one of Bernie's hidden talents that the M$M doesn't even mention or the Clinton supporters acknowledge - he gets things done.
I hope and pray Clinton can find success with the hurdle she does face if she is the President.
Good luck!

(796 posts)....but I can't take it on faith that Sanders will be more effective with Congress than he was as an actual member of both houses for many, many years.

(70,177 posts)many Sander supporters support this idea. I think we would have to have massive Vietnam era marches to perhaps get done the things he wants to pass in Congress. IMHO

Look at WI and KS and NC. People are getting kicked in the teeth daily yet they vote their tormentors back into office.
The people won't rise up. The best they can do is vote for Bernie because he is going to change everything. And Bernie says the people will change everything. When in actuality none of them will ever change shit!

I love how he's running against our popular Democratic President. Keep it up, BS.

(32,623 posts)Exactly. Anyone who gets how govt works in the real world knows that.
A successful President has to be able to, at least beyond media glare, communicate with the opposition realistically.

(10,406 posts)...just a sitting DEMOCRATIC President, one who is so well liked he was elected twice.
The BS man has a lot of nerve calling Obama naive about Congress considering he himself has not done anything of any substance in the 25 years he's been in Congress.

The truth is that Bernie Sanders is too self-absorbed and that's why as you note he's gotten nothing done.
Obama got a lot done, he's going down as a great president in the history books.

(31,228 posts)I'd have a whole lot more respect for him. BS is widely acclaimed for the crap he says, but on closer inspection, the meager things he's been able to do don't match the hype.
