Debt-free college under President Hillary Clinton?-HRC Room

HILLARY CLINTON ROOM POST

Jillian Berman

Students living in President Hillary Clinton’s America could go to college debt-free, her campaign manager hinted earlier this week.

Making college more affordable is part of Clinton’s plan to boost quality of life for ordinary Americans, Robby Mook, “Hillary for America” campaign manager, told CNBC in response to a question about which age demographic will be the toughest for Clinton to lure.

After Korean War, my father on GI Bill. My mother at NYSU when it was a free public university.

My son is in school debt-free on a VA benefit.

I still owe $9,000 from student loans beginning in late '80s. I am pretty sure I will be guaranteed at least one person at my funeral - a student loan representative confirming I won't be making any more payments.

Oh, and my total debt when I graduated with a BS? $13,000.

Books were costly, but tuition was free when I graduated in the 60s. After high school, almost everyone in my class had either enrolled in the local JC or moved to a state university. OK, some girls got married straight away or went to beauty school, and boys were still getting drafted or working in the family business.

School was important to the state who wanted to boast of an educated workforce to attract new businesses. Graduate students got higher paying jobs which in turn raised the tax revenues that allowed the state to fund a better educational system.

It takes public money to support a great university that attracts renowned educators and cutting edge research programs that draws students in from all over the world. The downward spiral of shortsighted austerity policies have gutted our state universities and the increasing costs of getting a good education is pricing most kids out.
