Bernie Sanders’s most vitriolic supporters really test the meaning of the word ‘progressive’

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/03/10/bernie-sanderss-most-vitriolic-supporters-really-test-the-meaning-of-the-word-progressive/

By Janell Ross

Sen. Bernie Sanders had a heck of a day Tuesday.

The presidential candidate scored an unexpected and significant victory in Michigan, adding real-world evidence to his campaign's claims that he can continue all the way to the Democratic National Convention. Sanders posted a two-point win, narrowly carrying the kind of state he has lacked -- a big one with a sizable black population. His opponent, Hillary Clinton, still beat him 2 to 1 among black voters. But Sanders earned a larger share of the black vote in Michigan than he has in any preceding state.

That's the good news for him. This post will admittedly not be about that. So, Sanders voters -- particularly those keyboard gangsters, frequent commenters and tweeters, and those convinced of a grand media conspiracy to end the Sanders campaign -- prepare. This piece is about another aspect of the Sanders campaign and some of you.

Something -- we cannot say what -- inside certain corners of the ostensibly progressive and overwhelmingly white ranks of Sanders voters is amiss. There is a pattern -- demonstrated time and time again -- by both Sanders and some Sanders supporters of racial cluelessness, an infantilizing and almost colonial kind of condescension about policy, and a tendency to react to anyone who points that out by, well, supplying even more evidence of racial tone-deafness, self-ordained intellectual superiority and sometimes completely open displays of various forms of outright bigotry.

That's right. We said it. In trying to make their case, Sanders, and far more often some subset of his supporters, behave in ways that are difficult to square with their claims to progressive politics and building a more inclusive and egalitarian society.

One final note before we get to a few examples of the behavior characterized above: The portion of Sanders supporters who read the paragraphs above and began to compose their tweets, emails and below-story comments, we are aware of that Intercept piece that argues that the "Berniebro" and his alleged public misbehavior is media-generated fiction.

But the emails, Twitter messages and comments I have received tell a different story. They use a variety of curse words and insults typically reserved for women. More than one has suggested that I deserve to become the victim of a sex crime. They critique the "objectivity" of what is clearly political analysis based on polling data and other facts; they insist that black voters are dumb or that I have a personal obligation to help black voters see the error of their Clinton-voting ways. It is vile. And it stands in sharp contrast to the claim that no portion of Sanders supporters are angry people who sometimes engage in or embrace bigotry.

Chichiri didn't want to risk the hides, so I posted it - the alerter said it was an "Endorsement of the belief Bernie Sanders supporters are bigots." I say the alert proves that they are deliberately trying to silence a minority on this board - hardly progressive or liberal.

I then posted it in GD: P, and I could say the replies bear out the article's premise....but if I did that, that would be hidden, wouldn't it?

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Totally abusive post and over the top.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sat Mar 12, 2016, 06:28 AM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I hate this Democrat-on-Democrat rhetoric but it is primary season and this is posted in the HRC group so most of us are not exposed to it. I'll be happy when we have a nominee. The anti-Bernie and anti-Hillary stuff will be confined to RW sites not DU.

Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is from a reputable reporter in the Wash Post. Nothing wrong in reporting the truth.

Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE

Explanation: From the Washington Post. I don't like it, but it's not against the rules to say what you feel in public, in private, or in print.

Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The post is appropriate for the safe haven group that it is in.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE

Explanation: FREEDOM OF SPEECH FROM THE POSTER WHO IS NOT TOO PUSILLANIMOUS TO PUT HIS NAME TO HIS VOTE-DEMOCRATSINCEBIRTH
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

They keep bringing up conspiracy theories that all those Bernie Sanders supporters who pestered Elizabeth Warren were somehow Clinton supporters in disguise, as is everyone who does something beyond the pale while supporting Sanders. I'm almost tempted to ask whether that should be relegated to the CT group.

In addition, they claim that since we no longer are trying to get them to disavow their fellows who do these things as proof that we did it only for political expediency. They have no self insight at all - it hasn't occurred to them that we don't do that anymore because we tried to get them to disown this behavior - but since they refused, we don't bother wasting our energy on getting them to repudiate such behavior.

My crime was in referring the "BernieUnderground" litmus test of blind and unquestioning loyalty to the non Democratic candidate who is vying to be the Goldwater/McGovern/Mondale of 2016! Said candidate is WAY too thin skinned to EVER be compatible in a national election against real (not northern New England) Republicans/teabaggers! I dread THAT outcome, although I WOULD vote for that candidate way before even considering a vote for Donald Rump or Canadian Cruz...YUCK!!!

PEACE!

that called my 98 years old mother a silent homophobe because she had an early stance against gay marriage, but has since changed her views and positions. Quite a feat for a person in their 90's. Tolerance and forgiveness and understanding totally lacking in BS supporters. They are beginning to sound more and more like Fox News acolytes.

That Sanders will win the GE because the Republicans will vote for him, as they do in Vermont.

I wish I'd bookmarked that thread - the temptation to ssk what the poster was on was too strong, and I had to leave or risk a hide'

"get her ass out of the primary." Apparently she thinks her "demands" trump, and I do mean Trump, the votes of 90% of the African American Democratic voters of Mississippi and all the others who given HRC more votes than any other candidate of either party this year. The teen's name was not mentioned, but it might as well have been Jane Crow. What does anyone's vote matter if it goes against her "demand"? Of course she had plenty of support from the usual useful....well, I'll just leave it at that. The last post I made about "white privileged cluelessness" got hidden.

Classic RW trick. Drive down participation with an 11th-hour stinker and the basher gets the prize. I knew that's what he must have done because that's the only way he could have closed that 20-point gap. And sure enough:

That's really going to help in November.
