Jewish PAC endorses Hillary Clinton for president-HRC ROOM

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A Jewish political action committee endorsed Hillary Clinton for president and pledged to help get out the vote for her.

JACPAC cited Clinton’s work as secretary of state in trying to bring about Israeli-Arab peace and her embrace of pro-Israel positions, as well as her commitment to maintaining abortion rights.

I am not familiar with this specific organization, but the post reminded me of two (quite distinct) things. The first is a conversation I had with a Jewish friend recently, who is a Hillary supporter. She said that Bernie's refusal to go to AIPAC does not sit comfortably with her or many of the people in her religious circles. She is not an Israel-does-everything-right person - she is critical of the way Palestinians are treated - but she is obviously also concerned about Israel. She also had some discomfort with him not being religious at all, even though she herself is pretty open-minded in her observance. It gave me some food for thought.

Secondly, the mention of abortion rights is interesting. In Judaism, as I understand it, life is seen as beginning at birth, not conception. That does not mean that abortion is necessarily OK, but it does mean that abortion rights are important. In cases where the mother's life is at stake, for example, Judaism (there might be exception among more conservative strands, I'm not sure) will err on the side of the life of the mother, which is a stark contrast with Catholicism. Much of the "pro-life" debate in this country is really driven by Catholic sensibilities, which had influenced Protestants as well. As such, the insistence on banning abortion is actually going against religious freedom, since not all religions think the same way about it.
