(4,035 posts)on researching women in cinema. It was her Institute that discovered that when women make up 17% of crowds and speaking roles, the viewers consider it parity, and that when women make up 33% of crowds and speaking roles (as well as speaking time in debates etc) they are perceived as dominating and getting more than half the share.
That has a profound effect on women from the time they are small girls. In classrooms, meeting rooms, boardrooms, and in the family, this has a chilling effect on equality. RBG saying that there would be enough women on the Supreme Court when there were nine of them is so revolutionary because most people perceive that 3 women and 6 men (5 now) makes it a gender-balanced court. The same with women roles in the media. The magazine Elle just did an interesting thing by taking iconic photographs and erasing all the men. One of the pictures was the President and Secretary Clinton in the situation room when they took down OBL. Clinton was the only woman there.
That Geena Davis is doing this research is vital to help when arguing for a more equal world for women. That we can show to statistics, that we can point to research helps overcome the automatic dismissal we always face. It doesn't surprise me, then, that Davis has chosen to support Clinton. She knows how important a woman President will be, and she is able to think independently and see beyond the smears of the right, picked up and delivered now by Bernie Sanders. Too bad her colleague cannot do the same.

(32,609 posts)I was aware of Geena's interests but had not been paying much attention lately. I should have been given what is going on in our current political climate.
I am going to find and watch that Elle video.
Thanks again.

(11,579 posts)I will look for that Elle "iconic photographs" article. It deserves wide circulation--especially considering Hillary is facing sexism.
