Brazilian Indigenous Block Construction of Belo Monte Dam
Brasilia, May 3 (Prensa Latina) Near 200 indigenous Brazilians from various ethnic groups paralyzed construction at Belo Monte dam, where the world's third largest hydroelectric dam is to be built, calling for environmental sensitivity.
The natives, who belong to the Munduruku, Juruna, Kayapo, Xipaya, Kuruaya, Asurini, Parakan and Arara ethnic groups asked the government to stop the works until environmental studies are completed and certify that the dam will not affect the nature of that Amazonian region in the state of Para.
They also demanded that the 169th bylaw of the International Labor Organization (ILO) be met, which asks those in charge of the construction to consult first with population of the area on the subject .

According to the "Consejo Indigenista de Misionero", CIMI, (Indigenous Council of Missionary) and "Xungu Vivo Para Siempre" 516 square kilometers of Amazonian forest will be inundated, forcing 50,000 indigenous and local farmers to leave there homes on the banks of the at Xingu river.
