Colombia Mulls Tougher Penalties For Drunk Driving

BOGOTA, Aug 1 (BERNAMA-NNN-XINHUA) -- Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said Wednesday that his government is proposing tougher penalties for drunk driving.

In a traffic safety bill to be presented to Congress for approval, the government is considering suspending the drunk driver's licence for 10 years plus the confiscation of the vehicle involved, said Santos.

If the vehicle involved is also to be seized apart from the suspension of the driver's licence, people who drive drunk will think twice, said the president.

"There are many countries where the fear of being punished generates a culture of not driving drunk."

The seized vehicle could be sold by the government or used as a public vehicle for social activities, he added.
