Brazil’s Lula given clean chit by doctors

Brazil’s Lula given clean chit by doctors
Sunday, 11 August 2013

SAO PAULO: Brazil’s popular former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was pronounced healthy by a team of doctors at Sao Paulo’s Sírio-Libanês hospital after routine tests yesterday.

The doctors said Lula had asked them to give a news conference after the exams to respond to rumours the former president had suffered a cancer recurrence.

Lula was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2011 and said he was cured of the disease in March of 2012.

His political protege, President Dilma Rousseff, was elected in 2010 and is expected to run for re-election next year. Lula has backed her candidacy but some speculate he could still step in at the last moment and run on the Worker’s Party ticket. REUTERS

Really glad his health is ok. Brazil and Latin America need him a lot.

I don't think he will be candidate in 2014, though. He has a lot of respect for Rousseff and said already she is his candidate. She's still the favorite for the next elections and she still has one year left to advance reforms. If she keeps her current rythm, her popularity will rise. But, of course, media won't be sleeping meanwhile. They'll play dirty, as usual. I hope Dilma understood that ignoring the games of media is not enough. She has to confront more, like Kirchner and Correa do, tell her voters and Brazilians in general her version of the facts.
